Top 3 tips to effectively pitch an idea

Our founder, Wade Kingsley, recently joined Jamie Wood from the Media Sales Mastery podcast to discuss the topic, “How to effectively pitch an idea”.

One of the primary responsibilities of a media sales business (or agency) is to sell ideas.

As Jamie says, "media solutions underpinned by a great creative idea will generate a stronger response for the advertiser”.

Everyone can spot a good idea when they see one, but pitching an idea successfully isn’t as easy. As a result, many great ideas are often left unrealised.

In this podcast, Wade shares his top 3 tips on how to effectively sell an idea:

  1. Preparation starts well before you’re in the room selling your idea - it starts with the brief. Casting the right people to attend that are going to ask different, lateral questions that allow you to uncover the right (and unique) information that your competitors won’t.

  2. Get your audience to feel something - stagger the pitch in a way that appeals to the emotional side before the rational side - as rational substance can always be defended. Also, it can be a good idea to present the elements of the idea that are likely going to be the most subjective, at the end. Get people to buy into the idea first as you can always change minor details later.

  3. Plan your ‘killer hook’ - like any great pop song, you need to have a killer hook - something that makes your idea memorable and recognisable. The killer hook will sell the idea for you so it’s important you spend time to get this right - detailed execution, platforms and inventory can come later. If they buy the hook, they will buy the idea.
